IBM is expanding the roster of midlife career transition programs offered to its employees with a pilot program for transitions to non-profit organizations. IBM is partnering on the project with The Bridgestar Group, a consulting firm that works with non-profits. Bridgestar has forecast that non-profits will face a gap of 640,000 managerial personnel by the year 2016, due to retirements and overall growth in the sector.

The IBM program will include web-based and offline training for employees interested in making the transition:

The program will include access to tools and content that help users assess their readiness for the transition, identify potential opportunities and skills required, apply for available job opportunities with nonprofits, and receive mentoring. After the pilot with IBM, the tools and resources developed will be made available for other nonprofits and corporations to start similar initiatives.

IBM previously launched Transition to Teaching and Transition to Government programs for its employees.
